History · Centretown area
What is the history of Centretown?
Short answer
Traditionally, Centretown meant all of Ottawa west of the Rideau Canal, while Lower Town was everything to the east. The area was represented in Parliament by two members from 1872 to 1935. A construction boom that began in the late nineties added many condominiums and other high-rise buildings north of Cooper Street.
As of · Updated
In 2009, the City of Ottawa launched a Mid-Centretown Community Design Plan study, which has since come to cover the whole of Centretown.
